Enter as Fiction (2015) marked the beginnings of what I call the orchestrated accident: a way of working that combines deliberate preparation with the unpredictability of travel. Moving through the Californian desert with a camera, costumes and props, I used places I encountered by chance as improvised film sets, inventing characters and performing them myself. Each photograph grew out of this exchange between what I had brought with me and what I found along the way, turning a journey through the American West into a strange, darkly comic road movie.
